    Abstract: The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) provides a reliable host-to-host datatransfer function in many network applications and plays a crucial role in controllingcongestion throughout the Internet. The performance-related issues arising inTCP-based applications stem primarily from the various interactions between theinternal TCP flow control and congestion control schemes and the surroundingcommunication environment. However, while many attempts have been made toimprove the performance of TCP, the algorithms and parameters which are suitablefor one environment are generally not transferable to others, and therefore TCP mustbe specifically adapted to different environments. Accordingly, this thesis discussesthe fundamental problems and performance limitations of the TCP transport-layerprotocol in various existing and emerging network systems and proposes a number ofschemes for enhancing the TCP performance. The proposed schemes are quantified interms of their achieved effective throughputs and are benchmarked against variousexisting TCP schemes. The numerical results confirm that the proposed schemesgreatly enhance the performance of TCP over a variety of heterogeneous networkenvironments.
