The cross-bonding is often adopted for underground cable grounding. When the section length is mutually equal, there exists only a limited amount of sheath circulating current; yet considering such section length in real-world underground cables constructions seldom reaches even, sheath loss reduction hence becomes an issue to further investigate. In this paper, a firefly algorithm is applied to determine the quantity of reactor, by which the sheath loss is expected to be improved. To confirm the practical value of this proposed approach, it was tested through two transmission lines. From the results gained from tests, they support the feasibility of the proposed method for the study considered.
